Budget option for compact IOT products:nRF52805 Bluetooth 5.2 SOC in WLCSP

Nordic semiconductor has announced new nRF52805 Bluetooth 5.2 SOC which makes the nrf52 proven series stronger further. The nRF52805 SOC is available in WLCSP Package which
offers the IOT product manufactures to have smaller two Layered PCB.This will save space as well as four layer PCB won't be required with the use of this Chip. The SOC is capable of providing good Bluetooth low Energy Throughput of 2 Mbps.It is also said that chip supports enhanced channel selection algorithm #2 (CSA #2)for better co-existence.

Compact Design with 2 layer PCB

nRF52805 chip is available in wafer level  chip scale package(WLCSP) with size as small as 2,48 x 2,48 nm.It means it will require less space on PCB.This SOC design has been optimized for the two layer so that there is no need of expensive four layer PCB.This will cut the cost for wireless IOT products which are constrained and budget conscious. This SOC will be ideal case for the Bluetooth Low Energy based products such as Stylus,Beacons,Sensors,Disposable Medical products. The IOT product manufactures can derive the advantage from this.

What is there inside nRF52805?

The nRF52805 runs on powerful ARM 32 bit 64 MHz Arm® Cortex®  M4 Processor which provides good efficiency of 64 Core Marks/mA. The chip has 192 KB Flash memory and 24 KB Ram. So the CPU speed is good and can provide power-packed performance.

The nRF52805 supports usual Digital and Analog Interfaces like SPI,UART,TWI, 12 bit ADC channels and ten GPIOs. These features can be used to add external interfaces like memory,Accelerometer,Serial port connectivity etc. on the board.

The multi protocol radio rpovide Tx power of +4 dBm and receiver sensitivity of  -97 dBm making a link budget of 101 dBm which is a good feature.

Low Power
nRF52805 consumes less power. It's radio peak power drawn is only 4.6 mA when TX power is at 0dBm and chip operated with 1 Mbps. The SOC draws the Sleep current .3uA
in System OFF Mode and in normal mode it draws around 1.1 uA in System ON mode with RAM retained and RTC is running.

Bluetooth 5.1 qualified protocol

The Stack which can be used, is qualified for the Bluetooth 5.1 protocol,Thus stack supports high Bluetooth LE throughput of 2 Mbps and CSA#2 features for improved co-existence.The stack supports four peripheral connections. Moreover, the number of connections and bandwidth per channel is configurable which is good flexibility. This flexbility is useful for having memory and performance optimized. The stack supports secure connections and pairing with improved security features.

Learn to Use nRF52805

The guide is available on Nordic Semiconductor's website to know how to use nRF51805 using nRF52 Software Development Kit(SDK).User can emulate nRF52805 using nRF52 DK. This can be very useful for the developers to get comfortable with nRF52805 and then shift to actual customized designs.

Conclusion

As Kjetil Holstad, Director of Product Management Nordic Semiconductor has rightly said

The nRF52805 extends the proven nRF52 Series with a Bluetooth 5.2 solution in a WLCSP optimized for budget-constrained two-layer PCB designs,”

Features -wise the nRF52805 is a good SOC for the wireless product developers who works on constrained,budget-sensitive products. The nRF52805 is available in WLCSP( 2,48 x 2,48 nm) and design is suitable for two layer PCBs which will reduce the PCB costs significantly as otherwise, four layer PCB for such products is expensive option.
The Support of Bluetooth LE 5.2 with addition of enhanced channel selection algorithm #2 (CSA #2) is good feature to deal with. The CSA #2 may prove handy in congested network conditions where many wireless devices operating in same 2.4 GHz frequency bands,With Maturity and stability of nRF52 series controllers further increases confidence in Developers to use new SOCs from Nordic Semiconductor.

This nRF52805 SOC can be a good option for developing a low power and secured Bluetooth Low Energy 5.1 based products.
