Nordic semiconductor today announced that Laird Connectivity, ohio based company has selected nRF52833 SOC Bluetooth LE System-on-Chip SOC supporting multi-protocol, for it's BL653 module series. The nRF52833 SOC was choice for for Laird to get good wireless connectivity along with extended temperature support to BL653 module.
BLE 653 Module
The BLE 653 is available in form factor of 15x10x2.2 mm and qualified of the extended temperature range of –40º to 105º Celsius. The features of BL653 makes it a good choice available for OEM vendors to develop IIOT based product which can work in harsh conditions of industries. The extended temperature range,Bluetooth connectivity, good memory footprint of 512KB Flash and and 128 Kb RAM,multi protocol support which adds multi protocol concurrency,nRF52833 offers a best bet.
Possible UseCase Scenario
The BL653 can be used in for multiple industry (IIOT)based solutions like asset tracking, lighting, predictive maintenance. These modules are equally fit to use in Health Domain for Fitness Sensor, medical device and for home automation.
Key Features of BLE 653 Module
The modules employing nRF52833 supports Bluetooth 5.2 with double air Data bandwidth,4 times more range,8 times broadcasting ability. The advertisement payload size is increased to 251 Bytes. The support for better Channel Selection Algorithm (CSA#2) improves the co-existence in the crowded 2.4 GHz Band. The SOC radio alongwith provide -95dBm RX sensitivity at 1 Mbps speed and maximum output power of 8dBm which totals to 108dBm Link Budget. The nRF52833 radio comes with feature of Bluetooth Finding Direction functionality. With the support of large memory, the device can support for transmitter and receiver roles for angle of Arrivals and Angle of Departures applications.
USB Support
As nRF42833 has Full USB interface,so the BL563 can be used as wired peripheral device. This module can be interfaced easily with host devices like PC,Tabs,Smart Phones and Gateways through UBS ports. So the Device Firmware (DFU) can also be updated through USB functionality..
Programming Options
This module offers multiple programming options including nRF5 SDK,RTOS,Zephyr RTOS,AT commands and Laird Connectivity's Own Smart Basic Environment. So the developers have plenty of options to write the firmware irrespective of their Bluetooth LE and Software experience.
nRF52833
nRF52833 which is at heart of the BL563 module is powered by ARM Cortex M4 processor with Floating point unit.It radio supports multiple protocols like Bluetooth LE 5.2,Bluetooth LE Mesh,,Zigbee,Thread,IEEE 802.15.4 and Nordic's proprietary 2,4Ghz software. This offers multiples options for IOT product developer to use protocol suitable for the targeted applications. The radio of nRF52833 supports Direction Finding Feature,Long Range and high data Rate of 2 Mbps which makes this SOC a strong contender in current scenarios of Internet of things. The nRF52833 supports S113 or S140 SoftDevices and Nordic Bluetooth LE Stack. The SD140 has passed the qualification for Bluetooth LE 5.1.
Why Laird Connectivity selected nRF52833?
Jonathan Kaye, Senior Director, Product Management at Laird Connectivity. said that they selected Nordic's nRF52883 for it's range,AOA,AOD support while extended temperature range of 105º is an attractive feature to penetrate into the market.
He also said
"Nordic also has a reputation for quality and responsiveness, in addition to everything else it has been providing across our long-standing seven-year development partnership history."
Certification
The BL653 is FCC and CE certified.
Conclusion
The use of nRF52833 in Laird Connectivity's BL653 Module prove beneficial for Laird. The Key features of BL653 Module like extended temperature range, good wireless range with better Link budget,Bluetooth 5.2 Support along with Direction Finding Functionality will make this module attractive for the IOT product developers to use it in their Wireless Products. This modules can be used in IIOT based applications which are developed for Harsh industrial Environment.
The Asset tracking,Medical devices,Sensor Applications and Home Automation are also good used case scenarios where this module can be employed.
